Travel Bags – 2021

This 6 day course is divided into two sessions of 3 days with a day off between ( Tuesday). It focuses on making high quality Travel Bags by hand. Students will have the choice of making a Framed Kit Bag or a Holdall style travel bag using vegetable tanned leathers. A selection of leathers and linings, plus a small range of Italian frames and metal fittings & zips will be available for students to choose from.
The course is suitable for those with experience or students who have been on courses with us in the past, it is not suitable for complete beginners.
The key areas to be covered include:
- Pattern cutting according to the style chosen
- Choice options : leather, frame, lock/zip, base studs and linings
- Preparing and cutting out the leather for the body, linings, pockets and handles/straps
- Choosing and cutting out reinforcements
- Sharpening and maintaining hand tools including knives, awls, bevellers, chanelling tools etc
Students will be helped to perfect their hand stitching skills and will be introduced to different construction options, determined by their choice of design.These will include paring and edge finishing techniques. The construction of the Travel Bag could be:
- cut edged
- piped and turned
Patterns will be available for students to use and copy but it may be necessary to adapt or create patterns to suit the style of Travel Bag chosen/designed. Handle, lining and pocket options will be explored.
A set of bench tools will be provided for each student to use during the course and a small range of materials and tools will be available to buy at the end of the course. Course notes and Suppliers Lists will be provided.
Material costs are not included in the course fee. (Lunch, morning and afternoon refreshments are included in the course fee)
