Top Frame Briefcase 2026 . September 5th – 12th

*The total cost of this course is £2170. To book your place you need to pay a 50% deposit of £1085. The remaining balance of £1085 will be charged 6 weeks before the course starts*

Course Details:

This 7 day course is divided into two sessions with a rest day between ( Wednesday September 9th).  Through a staged process,  this course will teach students the principle construction techniques for making  a ‘top’ framed  style briefcase with the aim of having a finished case at the end of the course.

The  course is only suitable for those with experience or students who have been on courses with us in the past, it is not suitable for complete beginners. The course tutor will be Neil MacGregor.

The key areas to be covered include:

1. Pattern cutting
2. Choice options : leathers, locks and linings
3. How to make the metal frame
4. Covering the frame with leather
5. Preparing gussets
6. Preparing and cutting out the leather for the body sections, the divisions, linings and handle
7. Preparing and making the attache style handle, with the appropriate fittings
8. Attaching the lock and handle

Students will need to have some experience in cut edge finishing, paring/skiving and of course, hand stitching and will be helped to perfect their skills.  A range of leathers and fittings will be available for students to buy and use on the course as they are not included in the course fee.

A set of tools is provided for each student to use while on the course and a small range of materials and tools will be available for students to buy at the end. Students can make copies of patterns for future use. There is a maximum of 4 students on this course.
