Roger Burrows is a technology developer, an inventor and mathematician. His latest book, “3D Thinking in Design and Architecture from Antiquity to the Future,” is published by Thames and Hudson Ltd. The book follows the development of ‘Visual Logic’ through time, from Neolithic petroglyphs and the ancient River Cultures, through the geometries of the Pythagoreans, the Celts and early Islam – all the way to the present and to a possible future.
We have known Roger for almost 50 years. When we heard he was making a trip to the UK in February 2019, we asked him to share his research and experience by giving a lecture and running a workshop here in Tetbury. To our delight he agreed. This is an opportunity not to be missed !
This workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn from Roger Burrows. It introduces design principles used in antiquity to create ‘meaningful and functional’ surface designs and architectural structures.
Depending upon the interests of those attending, participants can look at one or two design methodologies chosen from the following historic periods: Neolithic, Ancient Greek, Celtic, Early Islamic – or any featured in Roger’s latest book. You will only be looking at ancient design systems that are meaningful and functional at all levels: communicating, exercising logic or perception and otherwise enhancing the human experience.
Given the shortage of time printed ‘starter’ sheets, using design systems of a number of ancient cultures, will be available so that attendees will be able, more or less and if they want to, to complete ‘end’ designs during the workshop. Attendees with skills in drawing or with something like Adobe Illustrator, if they bring their laptops, may be able to apply principles more quickly. Paper, pens, pencils, drawing equipment will be available but please bring your own if you wish. Roger will show images, movie clips and animations to illustrate ancient design principles.
