Leatherworking: traditional skills & contemporary design

About the courses

The Leatherwork courses provided by Valerie Michael and Neil MacGregor  are based upon the techniques described in ‘The Leatherworking Handbook’ and experience of over 40 years as designers and makers of hand stitched leathergoods. (See macgregorandmichael.com ). Tuition is centred upon an awareness of both craftsmanship and design, so for students who are particularly interested in contemporary fashion accessories or more traditional leathergoods, these highly regarded courses provide the  foundation and progression students require.

2024 Leatherwork Courses

The 2024 course program will cover a range of abilities and be of different lengths, depending on the complexity of the syllabus. We are planing some Weekends and 6 day Schools, as well as Travel bags , and Briefcases courses. We will only have 4 students per course. Look at each of the course details pages for descriptions,  dates  and costs.

There is one place available on the Briefcases Course but all other courses are now full, sorry. However you can email us to be put on the Reserve list in case of cancellations.

These are practical courses. We teach students how to design & make a wide range of leather goods using only hand techniques. These include bags for women and men, cases, belts and associated fashion accessories, small leather goods including wallets & purses, travel bags/luggage, etc, using vegetable tanned leathers. Students are encouraged to develop their own individual styles and are helped to experiment and explore the creative potential of leather.

All courses take place in our workshop and with a very small group of 4 people so everyone receives individual tuition. A set of tools is provided and a range of leathers, hand tools, metal fittings and other materials are available for students to buy if they wish. Patterns and course notes are provided for specialist courses and a ‘Suppliers List’ is supplied. Lunch, morning and afternoon refreshments are provided within the course fees. See the drop down menu for full course details.

Daily session times are 9.00am – 5.15 pm (Sundays 9.00am to 5.00pm)
