Leather carving

The day will focus on

  • mastery of the ‘swivel knife’
  • how to transfer patterns to natural veg tanned hide,
  • how to create relief and decorative patterns using a range of tools
  • dyeing, colouring and finishing

No previous experience is needed.
All tools are provided for students to use.
Materials are included in the course fee.

Framed leather bags

Bags suspended from metal frames have been in and out of fashion over the years, the very best examples have become classic bags. Finding good quality frames, suitable leathers and framing tools are the key elements.
These courses will cover:

Students showing leather bags they have made
  • Principles of framed bag construction/ styles/options
  • How to cut patterns for the main body and lining for a chosen frame
  • The making of several simple hand stitched framed leather bags using hand framing tools

These courses are not suitable for complete beginners.

Bag making for men and women

6 day course – 2014

This course has been designed to help students explore sources of inspiration, including looking at the history of bag styles, leading to the development of their own design ideas. Students learn about different leathers and  construction techniques. A range of leathers and fittings are available to buy. Students may decide to design and complete a new bag during the course or may prefer to develop ideas, focusing on mastering techniques.

Syllabus includes:

  • Designing & Pattern making
  • Choosing suitable leathers
  • Linings,fittings, zips,locks and frames
  • Hand stitching
  • Hand paring/skiving ( thinning leather)
  • Construction options and making techniques, including cut, turned, piped and bound edges

This course is only suitable for those who are already experienced in bag making or who have attended a ‘ making hand stitched leathergoods’ course here. Course notes are provided. The cost of materials are not included in the course fee and are charged for separately, depending what is chosen and used.

Decorated Leather

2 day course – 2014

Student decorating gilt leather
Across the world and throughout history, leather has provided a wonderful medium for surface decoration. This course will introduce students to a range of decorative techniques including tooling (stamping), carving (incising), inlay/onlay, embossing, gilding and colouring. Sourcing suitable designs, leathers, tools and materials is an essential element of this course.

There will be opportunities for students to experiment and explore ideas, if they wish. Students require no previous experience in order to enjoy and benefit from this course.

Tools are provided for students to use

The cost of materials are included in the course fee.
